To Reduce Sound and Echos in Buildings, Use Plush Mats

All those tiled floors do nothing to help alleviate the situation, as sound waves bounce off them and back up to employees' ears. One of the easiest--and most cost-effective--methods of countering this is to use plush mats to line the walkways.

Sound waves reflect off of tile floors. To understand the reason that plush mats reduce noise pollution, consider the way sound travels. When sound is created, it travels from the source in waves of energy. These waves bounce off of hard surfaces (such as tile floors) and are absorbed by soft, porous surfaces (such as plush mats).

An echo is simply a sound that is reflected from a hard surface back to the source of the sound or a nearby listener. Thus, buildings that have a large amount of hard surfaces will have more echos than buildings that have more porous surfaces.

This is the reason that many recording studios will line their walls with thick carpeting, sponge, or other similarly porous materials. These materials absorb sound waves instead of radiating them back, thereby reducing the echo effect of sound.

Using plush mats to reduce noise pollution. Of course, it's not feasible to cover the walls of an office building with soft spongy material. To do so would be costly and would lead to significant upkeep costs as the soft material tears and has to be replaced.

However, there are other more cost-effective ways of reducing noise pollution. Chief among them is using plush mats to cover hard tile or concrete floors. Consider a tile or concrete floor: its surface is hard and smooth, making it ideal for reflecting sound waves back and forth.

On the other hand, a plush mat is covered with thick carpeting. Its surface is anything but smooth, and there are many tiny pockets of air and carpeting material to absorb sound waves. It stands to reason, then, that covering hard tile or concrete floors with plush mats would bring an immediate reduction in the amount of sound waves bouncing around the building.

The more carpeting, the more noise reduction. Keeping in mind the way sound waves travel, it follows that covering a greater portion of the floor with plush matting will reduce noise even more. For example, a 20-foot hallway with a 15-foot mat in it will be much quieter than the same hallway with only a 5-foot mat. The longer the mat you use, the more carpeting you lay down, and the better the noise reduction.

Other benefits of using plush mats. In addition to reducing sound, using plush mats over hard concrete or tile floors has other benefits. For one thing, the carpeting will trap dirt and dust, keeping the rest of the building cleaner. The mats are easy to clean, reducing janitorial costs.

Another benefit is that matting yields better traction than concrete or tile floors. Better traction means less of a chance that someone will slip and injure themselves, leading to costly consequences in the form of missed work and possibly even lawsuits.
